Health Literacy Training
Did you know that within the area local to East Surrey Hospital, the estimated prevalence of combined low health literacy and health numeracy is 50.61%, and around Crawley Hospital, it is even higher at 62.77%? This means a significant percentage of our patients do not understand the information they receive from us, whether spoken, in a letter, or in a patient information leaflet. That the CQC looks for evidence of people having their communication needs met and that information is shared in a way that can be understood? That effective communication can be a key factor in patient safety incidents? The HEE definition of patient-centred care is that care is focused on the needs of the individual, including communications. And did you know that the SaSH Library and Knowledge Team offer tailored information sessions around health literacy?
